Review question: What is the best available evidence on recruitment manoeuvres compared to standard care for adults with acute lung injury (ALI) receiving mechanical ventilation? Type of review: This is a Cochrane review involving a meta-analysis of seven prospective randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Relevance to nursing Mechanically ventilated patients with ALI or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are often treated with recruitment manoeuvres as one of the primary targets of respiratory care in intensive care units (ICU). A recruitment manoeuvre involves an application of a sustained inflation pressure to the lungs for a specific duration to open the collapsed alveoli to facilitate the lungs to normal volumes and distribution of air, thus improving gas exchange. However, the outcomes of recruitment manoeuvres on ALI and ARDS patients have not been well established.
