Concrete piloti columns form the main feature to the western facade

The concrete piloti columns (angled in a 'V shape) that form the main feature to the western facade to support the roof structure, required detailed 3D modelling, and a custom fibreglass mould. Because the columns change shape progressively through their height, guy ropes had to be used to ensure reinforcing was installed freestanding, with the mould installed around it. The formwork was challenging, requiring a high standard of accuracy and finish, particularly on the inclined 'Piloti' columns. Dimensional tolerances conformed to AS3610 clause 3.4 as applicable for formed surfaces and otherwise to AS3600 clause 19.5. All circular columns used spun fibrous cement forms by Hardies. For concrete of surface classes 1, 2 or 3, the formwork was set out to give a regular arrangement of panels, joints, bolt holes, and the like visible elements in the formed surface. Formed 45 degree bevels, 25 mm on the face, on corners and angles applied throughout. Class 1 formwork and Class A concrete finish included the Piloti columns and external concrete surfaces where not covered with tiles. All concrete used was to the requirements of AS3600 clause 19.1 and AS1379 - 1997.
