While we are all working hard in our fight against COVID, it is important to ensure that we continue to prescribe safely and accurately for our patients. Over 300 million patient consultations take place at GP surgeries each year, with a high number of telephone consultations now replacing the conventional face-to-face model since early 2020. This means there is more remote diagnosis and consequently more remote prescribing. The RCGP recognised the need for formal assessment of prescribing even before this shift in practice. After a pilot study, the RCGP introduced the prescribing assessment (PA) as a mandatory component of work place based assessment (WPBA).
