Following the introduction, the main body of the book consists of seven chapters: 1. Hearing as the basis of development of spoken language; 2. Factors that detract from the use of hearing; 3. Laying the foundation of language through daily living; 4. Parent guidance; 5. Lessons learned worldwide from observation of interaction of adults with children who have a hearing loss; 6. Educational placement; and 7. The way forward. The bibliography comprises 79 references, the majority being books, but few original papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals are included.
