Sharing the milk pool

While it might seem that the New Zealand dairy industry equals Fonterra, New Zealand correspondent Birger Nordmark highlights some of the smaller players and how they access milk from their much-larger 'cousin'. The Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001 (DIRA) laid the framework for the consolidation of the dairy industry and the formation of the Fonterra Co-operative Group. It left three companies to collect and transport the bulk of the milk from producing farms to processing plants. These companies reported the following contributions to that task during the 2006/07 dairy season:
