International demand for cheese is up, but prices are heading down

ABARE recently made some forecasts about trends in the international dairy industry to 2010/11. Following is what it had to say about cheese today and into the medium term. Total world cheese consumption increased by 17% between 2000 and 2005. This increase was driven by the Russian Federation and the Ukraine, where annual per person cheese consumption is estimated to have doubled in that timeframe, increasing from 1.7kg to 3.5kg a year. This compares with increases in per person cheese consumption in the major dairy consuming markets of the US and the EU of just 7% and 9%, respectively.
