FAMILY-OWNED and operated farms are the benchmark in the Australian dairy industry but some observers expect greater outside investment in this sector in the near future. Where that investment will come from, and in what form it will take, was a majortheme during the Dairy Innovators conference at Mt Gambier, SA, earlier this year. Agribusiness specialist Rod North, of Bourse Communications, told the conference more than 1 billion dollar a year is already directed into agribusiness investments by financial planners, accountants and high-net-worth individuals. Most of that money is directed to companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, especially large-scale listed timber companies such as Timbercorp, Great Southern Plantations and Gunns.
