The Red Flag Canal: a socio-ecological practice miracle from serendipity, through impossibility, to reality

Abstract This showcase article presents a 50-year-old, 1500-km-long irrigation canal in China as an exemplary case of socio-ecological practice. With a focus on its genesis, the article is the first of a mini-series on one of the best kept secrets in the history of socio-ecological practice.
