In field trials in 1996-98, sugarbeet cv. Oscar poly, MG 561 and Prisma grown in sandy soil were irrigated with tap water or saline water with 3000, 6000 or 9000 ppm NaCl. Increasing salinity beyond 3000 ppm decreased relative water content, K/Na ratio in root, fresh root weight and root and sugar yields, but increased percentage sugar. Cv. Oscar poly had the greatest root and sugar yields and showed the greatest salt tolerance.
