Studies on the incidence and pathology of different disorder of the ovary in Desi laying hens in and around Lahore.

This study was conducted to determine the incidence and pathology of ovaries in Desi chickens and the relationships between salmonellosis, mycoplasmosis and egg drop syndrome and the different types of ovarian abnormalities. Out of 300 Desi laying hens examined, only 12 (4%) birds showed 2 pathological conditions, oophoritis (2.6%) and degenerative ovarian follicles (1.3%). In oophoritis, the ovaries were haemorrhagic and congested. Infiltration of heterophils was noted in the follicular wall. In the degenerative ovarian follicle cases, a caseous mass was found in the flaccid follicle. The sloughed granulosa cells accumulated in some of the ovaries, causing obliteration of the follicular lumen. Biometrical studies of the ovaries were also carried out. In oophoritis cases, 5 were positive for Salmonella pullorum and S. gallinarum and 2 for Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Only one sample was positive for egg drop syndrome (EDS) 76 infection. In the 4 degenerative ovarian follicle cases, 2 were positive for Salmonella sp. and one was positive for Mycoplasma sp. infection.
