Effect of banana compost as organic manure on growth, nutrients status, yield and fruit quality of Maghrabi banana

The effect of re-applied banana waste (leaves, stems and corms) after composed as an organic manure on the growth, nutrients status, yield and fruit quality of Maghrabi banana grown in Oseim, Giza governorate was studied during 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 seasons. The results showed that: using banana compost enriched with 50% or 25% chemical fertilizer (NPK) + sulphur resulted in improving the vegetative growth as heigh pseudostem length and circumference, green leaves number and leaf area, while banana compost + 75% chemical fertilizer (NPK) + sulphur treatment produced larger total suckers number. In addition the best bunch characteristics (length, circumference, number of fingers and weight) were produced from banana compost application with 50% or 25% chemical fertilizer + sulphur, associated with early maturity stage and the best fruit properties (length, diameter, weight and T.S.S/ acid ratio). Both of FYM (farm yard manure) and banana compost under 100% chemical fertilizer alone of combined with sulphur treatments gave high leaves content of N, P and K (macro nutrients), while banana compost under 75-50% chemical fertilizer + sulphure treatments produced leaves which had high (micro nutrients) Fe - Zn and Mn content. FYM treated banana plants gave higher K content in fruits in the first season and higher N content in the second one. In addation , banana compost applied to banana plants especially those under 100 then 75% chemical fertilizer + sulphur had higher N, Fe content in fruits in the first season but in the second one higher P, K, and Zn content in fruits was found. The best effective treatment was applicaion of banana compost under 50, 25% chemical fertilizer +sulphur to obtain high yield with best quality of fruit as well as lowest production costs.
