With oil price volatility and growing consensus about the threats posed by greenhouse gases, vehicle manufacturers are seeking ways to maximise fuel economy and minimise emissions. Navigation systems are starting to show the "lowest fuel usage" route as well as the fastest and shortest. Vehicle displays show the driver fuel usage and compare it to the usage of other drivers with the same vehicle model. Vehicle owners with telematics systems might soon be encouraged to upload fuel usage data from their vehicles and receive a comparison with other drivers and the ideal "fuel-efficient driver". Telematics can also address uncertainties of being an early adopter of Electric Vehicles (EV): Where to refuel and how to recharge most economically? What is the most economical EV route? Whether helping drivers decide how to drive or what to drive, influencing behaviour is one way vehicle communications can help substantially reduce fuel usage and vehicle emissions.
