The respiratory and explosion risk of dust in coal handling is a well-documented issue and the focus of many discussions. Airborne dust and air quality issues are often of particular focus, due to the direct risk to workers and facilities. Controlling dust generation at the load zone works to directly minimise airborne dust. Coal dust is generated anytime the material is moving: dust is generated as the material falls to the floor, as equipment and personal move through the area where coal has collected, and while cleaning the area. That is why combatting spillage in the load zone can be an effective way to minimise dust at a facility.
