The leadership characteristics that really matter are rarely mentioned in job advertisements, according to Professor Nick Forster from the Graduate School of Management at the University of Western Australia. Prof. Forster believes effective leadership is not about leading, but following - being the person others want to follow, Professor Barry Posner, the author of The Leadership Challenge, describes the concept as 'followership'. Based on surveys of 220,000 managers and leaders world-wide over a 15-year period. Prof. Posner has identified the Big 5 leadership characteristics that people claim to follow willingly and enthusiastically, rather than just because someone is their'boss'.
