Pandemic reduces global NR sector demand by $4bn

The Covid-19 crisis caused a $4-billion loss in consumption in the global natural rubber sector in 2020,according to figures from the International Rubber Study Group(IRSG).The immediate shock was demand-driven,but there will be gradual changes in the pattern of production and consumption,said IRSG's secretary general Sal-vatore Pinizzotto at the China Rubber Conference 2021 held in Qingdao this April.The global NR sector has over 13 million hectares of plantation and produces 13.6 million tonnes each year,of which 90 are produced by smallholder farmers.
