The new Erich Weigold Building, at ANU in Canberra enables the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratories and part of the Plasma Research Laboratory to be rehoused in modern facilities meeting current safety standards and to play a leading role in the advancement of molecular science. The project brief was to create an economical, flexible, modular building to consolidate staff and experiments that were previously fractured throughout the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering. The building's opening is fitting in the context of the progress in its field. Last year was the 50th anniversary of the famous discovery of the structure of the DNA spiral by Watson and Crick. Since that seminal finding, progress has been exponential in understanding our fundamental genetic makeup. The recent unravelling of the human genome has been hailed as the greatest discovery in the 50 years since the unearthing of the structure of DNA.
