'I am noticing a change in the last 12 to 18 months in terms of the demand for innovation all on the back of sustainability,' Mr Kent tells Highways. 'I have been at Tarmac for 28 years and I have been in this position for 10, and in the last decade, it has very much been us innovating, going to customers and saying this is better, more sustainable, faster, can save you money, etc. In the last 18 months, we have had a lot of people coming to us saying: what have you got that is more sustainable?' This is good news for the sector and the environment - what is good for sustainability is usually good for business in the long run. A year ago, Tarmac made an announcement that shifted the entire industry - a switch to warm mix asphalt by default. The materials giant, whose original founder, Edgar Hooley, first patented traditional hot mix asphalt in 1902, said it would move production to warm mix asphalt to save 13,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
