Bounty, and tragedy: Again this year, Bristol Bay is showing its amazing strength as a sockeye salmon producer. At press time, the catch had exceeded 20 million fish with the harvest still going strong. The state's preseason forecast was for a harvest of 36.35 million sockeye. The Nushagak District was the early hotspot, setting records for daily catch. The large catches owed in part to the huge amount of fishing power concentrated in the district. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game on July 1 reported 740 permits and 554 vessels were registered to fish in the Nushagak.
