A select group of leading offshore fabricators has been invited to participate in a new contest for a large central processing platform destined for Vietnam's long-awaited, multibillion-dollar Block B gas project. The opportunity to bid for the large fixed platform came up unexpectedly when the Block B project operator decided several months ago to re-tender the facility because the validity of the bids in the previous tender round had expired. The re-tender has now started and bid submissions are due in early March, according to well-placed sources in Vietnam. The invited bidders are US offshore contractor McDermott, South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, Italian services major Saipem, Vietnam's PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), and a pairing of Technip with Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering. McDermott and Hyundai had been the final two contenders in the previous tender. The target date for the award of the contract is early July 2023, and Vietnam-based sources said a final investment decision for the Block B project is expected around the same time.
