The general concept of a swivel wheel sorter has been known for some time, for example from patent EP 0 186 743. Such a system basically consists of a set of conveyor section, one after the other. Between the conveyor sections wheels are placed that can exert a sideways force on passing items. By controlling the location at which this force is applied to an item, the location at which that item is removed from the conveyor line is determined. This type of conveyors is used to sort items with a medium throughput.
