A large-scale cross-sectional study of nearly half a million surgical procedures found no significant difference in outcomes between operations carried out by surgeons who had worked the night before their daytime shift and those where the surgeon had not worked the night before. However, an accompanying editorial in JAMA Internal Medicine cautions against being overly reassured by the findings.
