The loss of what it means to be a doctor, the inability to have a dialogue with management and colleagues, too much pressure, too many conflicts and insufficient recognition all contribute to a 'deleterious atmosphere' at work leading to burnout among French hospital physicians, this qualitative study finds1. The study was conducted from January 2018 to April 2019 using a published methodology for analysing lived experiences2.The researchers carried out structured interviews with 45 participants (19 women, 26 men).The group comprised 16 doctors with a lived experience of burnout and 29 of their colleagues. It included radiologists, gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons and residents (junior doctors).
