Pittsburgh-Shell Chemical Appalachia, a subsidiary of Shell Plc, has begun operations at its Pennsylvania Chemical project, Shell Polymers Monaca (SPM), which includes a polyethylene (PE) manufacturing complex in Potter Township, Beaver County, Penn. (PCN, 8 Aug 2022, p 1). The project, originally estimated to cost around $6-billion, includes an ethane cracker, which uses low-cost ethane from the Utica and Marcellus basins for the production of 1.6-million t/y of PE. It is expected to ramp up to full production by the second half of 2023.
