The difficulty of effectively colouring polyurethane foams, particularly in deeper, darker colours, has been challenging the industry for many years. The innate cream-yellow of unmodified PU foam is reasonably unattractive to consumers. Coloured foams are more attractive to consumers and help manufacturers to differentiate their products. Coloured PU foam can also be less susceptible to the unattractive discolouration which can occur in uncoloured PU when exposed to daylight. Until recently, colour has been achieved using pastes of pigment dispersed in liquid, but this comes with significant challenges.
