The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and North American Electric Reliability Corp. released a letter on July 29 recommending a forum to identify actions the US electric utility and natural gas industries can take to bolster bulk power system reliability. The letter, addressed to the North American Energy Standards Board, or NAESB, followed a joint FERC and NERC report into the root causes of grid outages during severe winter weather in mid-February 2021. The extreme cold weather event knocked out power for millions of consumers in the US Southwest and brought the grid operated by the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas to the brink of cascading blackouts.
