The concept of vacuum devices to create an erection is not new but only recently have they been studied scientifically and gained acceptance by the medical community. The vacuum pump draws enough blood into the penis to create an erection and rigidity is maintained with a constricting band or a silicone sheath. These devices produce a satisfactory erection in most patients, appear safe, and represent a viable treatment alternative for selected patients with erectile dysfunction.
