Al-5Mg-3Zn-1Cu cast alloy can obtain high mechanical properties by single-step aging treatment at 120 degrees C, but this process is inefficient due to aging time of 156 h. The double-step aging treatment at 120 degrees C for 1 h and then at 150 degrees C for 4 h significantly reduced the time, from 156 to 5 h to peak aging, and still achieved similar mechanical properties. The main strengthening phase of the alloy is fine and dispersed GP zones under both aging treatment processes. The double-step aging processing greatly improves the productivity in heat treatment of Al5Mg-3Zn-1Cu cast alloys.
