With an extensive domestic network spanning the length and breadth of Spain - including its Balearic andCanary Islands - Valencia-based Air Nostrum has a unique challenge: to compete not just with other air carriers but with ferry and train operators for price-, time- and increasingly carbon-conscious passengers. An announcement in June 2022 that it had entered into an agreement with Bedford-headquartered Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) to become the first airline to incorporate the Airlander 10 airship into its fleet should therefore perhaps have come as no surprise. The helium-filled aircraft will come with hybrid-electric engines that offer a 90% reduction inemissions over other aircraft. The airship carries 100 passengers or a 10-tonne maximum payload, and can remain airborne for five days, with a 4,000nm maximum range.
