SHELL has long been the favourite target of anti-fossil fuel crusaders. Just using its name boosts campaign profiles, galvanises activists and raises funds. The supermajor has become a lightning conductor for grievances - often legitimate -against its activities, and something of a bellwether for the visceral animosity felt in many quarters towards the oil and gas industry. In Nigeria, fairly or not, Shell's name has become synonymous with the negative environmental and social effects in the Niger Delta, aided and abetted by a broken state apparatus focused on self-enrichment.
