Aluminium top hat delivers a lighter, sustainable alternative for automakers

Alumobility, an organization focused on technical studies to advance the adoption of aluminium automotive body sheet, has revealed the results of its latest study. This demonstrates that an aluminium auto-motive top hat, the upper structure of a vehicle’s body-in-white, can save significant weight compared to steel while meeting or exceeding automakers’ performance criteria. As outlined at Automotive Circle’s annual EuroCarBody conference, the study’s aluminium top hat achieved 42% weight savings compared to the reference top hat of the current Audi e-tron electric SUV, which uses advanced (AHSS) and ultra-high-strength steels (UHSS).
