This is not a book about natural dyeing -this is a delicious reference volume apropos the glorious colours provided to us by nature, and offers a more subtle alternative to the formulaic, processed colours of the commercial shade charts. With 25 natural colour palettes and over 500 individual colour swatches this book has become a constant companion to my yarn and fabric design process. Offering intriguing combinations of colour this is a manual that will appeal to anybody who loves colour, generating inspiration from each of the beautifully presented palettes. For uniformity of content, each dyed sample is displayed on silk, although teasing illustrations show the differing results of the dyeing process on other fibres. Accompanying each set of colours is a short background to the plant source, its history and habitat, together with a key showing which mordant was used to obtain each sample. Interspersed throughout are glorious photographs - any of which would provide inspiration for a new creative project. Although the emphasis of this book is on the flora of the western United States, many of the plants are known, and can be found, throughout the world. This is not a 'how to' book: if you are looking for information on creating your own natural dyes and the process of using them, this 440-page tome is not for you.
