So you want to sell a portion or all of the standing timber on your woodlot. Major decisions must be made. In their lifetime most woodlot owners will only see one mature crop of trees on any one area. How much to harvest, what is the expected return,who to sell to? And what are the tax implications? Two things work in the woodlot owner's favor. There is lots of competition for standing timber. Forest harvesting contractors are getting hungry as the number of available timber lots dwindle. When the wholesale price of lumber or newsprint goes down, that drop is largely absorbed by the mills and forest harvesting contractors. In many cases it has only a minimum effect on, stumpage rates.
