摘要

Often streets are the only remaining places where city dwellers can be offered open spaces that are pleasant to spend time in. Equally, new mobility trends, which need to be encouraged as part of the battle against climate change, require their own space. In addition, the urgent need to adapt to temperatures that are rising due to climate change must be considered. What is possible in new urban spaces is shown by the Seestadt Aspern in Vienna, where it was possible to implement plans such as those from the office 3.0 landscape architecture, which envisaged a high proportion of trees, green areas, and usable space and, through technical innovations, also make use of rainwater. However, in the older city reality still lags far behind this reality. Rigidly defined predetermined conditions and long-established administrative constraints make it difficult to realise new green concepts for street space. Tree-planting, which is so important, is often not possible or only in individual cases. Space underneath the street is just as hotly contested as at ground level and only limited room is available for tree roots. But because it is precisely the existing city, with its generally dense development structures and limited amount of planting, which is dependent on measures to cool the climate, increasing use is being made of technical solutions for cooling street spaces.
