Treating degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis (OA) in horses is a major part of equine practice. The goals of treatment are to prevent progression of the disease and to provide pain free ambulation in order to alleviate performance limiting lameness. Usually a multi-faceted approach is used to treat OA in horses which may comprise one or more of the following: systemic therapy -parenteral and oral treatments, intra-articular therapy, surgery, and physical therapy.
