Mugo Pine

It was apparently the naturalist, Pierre Belon, who first used the term conifer (cone bearer) in the 16th century because most of these trees have conic shaped fruit. However, there is another term indicating these trees as resinous, and in our particular case the Swiss mountain pine, Pinus mugo, is particularly rich in resin. The general characteristics of the Pinus genus allow us to understand the species to which the Swiss mountain pine belongs. This genus includes more than 90 species widely extended all over the boreal hemisphere. Its needle display is one of the main characteristics. They form bundles from two to five needles, held together at their base by a sheath (featuring an appearance that has a texture that is translucent and membranous). In Italy there are 15 different Pinus species, all belonging to the Pinaceae family.
