As thepasture gets high at hisplace near Browns Flat on the lower St. John River in New Brunswick, Brent Makepeace likes to buy six or eight yearling feeders to summer out on the grass. This May the process was going much as usual. Brent traveled up river to cross the Evandale ferry, on to Wickhamto load his new cattle on a borrowed truck, and then started the return journey with seven young cattle on board. But the process began to go awry while unloading when three of the newly arrived got a spookand decided to split from the scene. This is not entirely uncommon for new cattle - to get upset and go for a hike. Usually after a few hours on the run, most cattlejustsetuedown, and that's whatBrent expected would happen in this case.
