Western Australian beekeepers are keen not to see Varroa or Small Hive Beetle in their hives. Most beekeepers here are maintaining their good level of reporting anything unusual. It continues to benefit the industry and others too - like the almond industry. In September 2006, vigilant beekeepers observed something unusual within the cells of several frames of brood in a bee hive. I had certainly not seen this sort of thing before. My first thought was that the bees had somehow collected small spherical objects, spores may be? and placed hundreds of them in many cells in amongst the sealed brood (Fig. 1).
