Apparel sales for fall items at department stores continued to be sluggish. For the first half of this year, the apparel industry registered sales substantially higher than the preceding year, but sales have fallen rapidly since summer. The prolonged unseasonable weather is though to be responsible, in addition to an intensifying uncertainty about the economy's near-term course.
