Volkart Brothers of Switzerland had formed a joint venture with the Tatas of India, called Voltas Ltd. It is Voltas, which brought Rieter, perhaps the world's most well-known and respected producer of textile spinning machinery, to India, in a joint venture with Lakshmi Machine Works of Coimbatore. Voltas is a century old firm and trades in many products, but textile machinery used to account for a significant part of its turnover and profits until a new years ago.
