Diversity and flexibility are key: Merle Wallace Ltd. integrates different harvesting methods

The forest management strategy at Merle Wallace Ltd. focuses on diversity and flexibility says its Woodlands Manager Tim Blaney. "We strive to keep a broad diversity of species all across our woodlands," he says, "and I incorporate a lot of differentstand management strategies. And equally, we use different harvesting methods and sell wood to a variety of mills." Blaney, who graduated from the Maritime Forest Ranger School in 1983, worked in the forest industry before being hired by Merle Wallace Ltd., a company founded by Merle Wallacein the late 1940s. Wallace, who grew up in the farming community of Millville, east ofNackawic, New Brunswick, first established an insurance and fertilizer sales business and then added wood brokering to the enterprise. In time he signed contracts to supply a number of mills in the region, and also took on stumpage contracts, buying woodlots around Millville.
