FOREST BIOMASS ATLANTIC: The provincial year of forest soils?

As some APR readers may know, the United Nations has declared 2011 as the "International Year of Forests." The intent of this declaration is to "raise awareness and promote global action to sustainably manage, conserve, anddevelop all types of forests, including trees outside of forests." In keeping with the spirit of this UN declaration, I would like to unoffi-cially declare 2009 as the "Provincial Year of Forest Soils." Why do I want to do this? Because of all the components that make up a forest ecosystem, I believe it is soil that needs the most awareness raising and action promotion. I would argtie the need for this awareness and action lias never been more important to sustainable forest management than it is right now.
