The lone, little red dot representing the paper mill in central Newfoundland is about to be erased from AbitibiBowater's global map of operations. The newsprint giant's Dec. 4announce-ment that it will close the mill in Grand Falls-Windsor in early spring was no surprise to those watching the situation. Knowing full well it could lead to the mill' s demise, the mill' s unionized workers rejected two company proposals to restructure the operation. Those proposals lacked early retirement incentives and would have still led to the loss of 200 jobs and increased contracting-out of work. It is a shock to the regional economy's system nonetheless.
