SRM - a major pain in the ganglia: Abattoirs need a way to dispose of cattle parts deemed to carry BSE risk

There used to be a market or at least a practical use for everything that came out of a slaughterhouse. As of this summer, that's no longer the case. Canada's new regulations to prevent the spread of BSE (Bovine spongiform en-cephalopathy) have made certain parts of the bovine anatomy worse than useless. These "spcined risk materials" (SRM) must be removed, dyed, and destroyed or permanently contained. The Atlantic provinces have been scrambling to find acceptable ways to dispose of the stuff.
