This is a practical yet stimulating book which does what the title says. The media used are indeed mixed, including techniques familiar to textile artists - stitching, wrapping, knotting and simple weaving - and more unusual ones such as sawing, drilling and casting. The numerous examples of work by the author and other artists are well photographed and labelled. Starting with inspiration and ideas for themes, the book moves on to researching and collecting information. We are encouraged to experiment with different textiles, fibres and organic materials such as leaves, as well as the more unexpected -concrete, anyone? We are shown how to prepare them, and given advice on the tools to use. A chapter called 'Conveying meaning' covers the display and labelling of work to do just that, and another goes into more detail about three-dimensional aspects. The author, winner of the inaugural Vlieseline Fine Art Textiles Award in 2019, goes into detail about how, inspired by nature, she made some of her pieces. Both an inspirational work and a practical manual, this book will be useful for many artists, particularly those making two- or three-dimensional works incorporating textile elements. Embroiderers will find much to inspire them, as will tapestry weavers looking to incorporate more unusual ideas in their work.
