During a visit to the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Feb. 7 Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated his country's support for Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. Lavrov also spoke out against the US sanctions placed on the South American nation, and any entities that do business with the country. "We condemn the absolutely illegitimate levers of financial and economic pressure on Venezuela. The goal is obvious-to foment discontent, provoke a social explosion by blocking the financial, oil, gold mining sectors of the Venezuelan economy."
