(Abstracted from JAMA 2021;326:1473–1474) A total of 13 states have enacted fetal heartbeat laws banning abortion once embryonic cardiac activity is detected. Despite enforcement of these laws being found unconstitutional by various courts, on September 1, 2021, the US Supreme Court allowed passage of a Texas fetal heartbeat law (SB8).
