ATSAF/DSE: Report on the Expert Consultation on 'Periurban Vegetable Production in the Tropics and Subtropics - Food, Income, Quality of Life', 14.11. - 17.11.94 in Zschortau/Germany

Promotion of vegetable production has been neglected so far compared to staple crops. Vegetable production plays an important role in the development of sustainable production systems. Legumes, for example, contribute to maintain soil fertility; intercropping practices reduce pesticide input and improve labour economy. Horticultural systems have been analyzed in more detail in recent years; however, the results have not been sufficiently transferred into development policy. An expansion of vegetableproduction and marketing may significantly enhance the income of rural and urban populations, especially women. Urban/periurban agriculture was chosen as a key concept for the expert consultation on "Periurban Vegetable Production in the Tropics and Subtropics - Food, Income, Quality of Life", held in Zschortau, Germany, 14 -17.11.94, due to its important socioeconomic, nutritional and ecological bearing for the fast growing urban populations in the South.
