Seattle's recycling program was awarded a Silver Excellence Award for Public Education from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) for its Recycling IQ campaign. The game allows players to sort 36 common household items into garbage, mixed recycling, or glass recycling bins. Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) created the web-based game to test player's knowledge of its recycling methods. More than 11,000 residents have played since its launch last year -- sorting, on average, 87 percent of the items correctly. "We're thrilled with the results," said Brett Stav of Seattle Public Utilities. "The Recycling IQ Game provides us with solid customer research data that will help us educate our customers about proper recycling."
