LNG demand to stay strong despite nuclear restarts

Japanese LNG demand is likely to remain strong next year despite as many as eight nuclear plant restarts, as extra gasfired generation capacity comes on stream. Nuclear regulatory authority the NRA is now assessing Japanese reactors against new nuclear safety guidelines that came into effect on 8 July. A total of four power utilities have so far applied to restart 12 reactors, with eight likely to come on line next year based on an analysis of the applications and plans submitted and information from the utilities and the NRA.
