Russian independents to target Asia and Europe

Russian independent gas producers are expected to export LNG to Asia-Pacific and western European states that cannot easily be reached by pipeline, Russian parliamentary deputy Valery Yazev told a recent gas conference in Brussels, Belgium. The UK, Spain and Portugal are among the EU countries that cannot be easily reached by pipeline from Russia, Yazev said. Independent gas producer Novatek and state-controlled oil company Rosneft are lobbying for gas export rights for their planned LNG projects, which would break state-controlled Gazprom’s existing export monopoly. A decision on LNG liberalisation is expected this year (AGL, February, p1).
